/Fortnite_Installer

As part of the retainer work Work & Co has been doing for Epic Games, we were tasked with helping them get an Android application ready to serve as an installer for their hit Battle Royale game, Fortnite. This was a unique opportunity: being part of a talented team, and helping create an application that would be used by millions of people across the globe.

As an embedded part of their team, Work & Co's role was mostly focused on designing and implementing the user interface for the app. The UI uses modern web technology (React, Redux, etc.), and is loaded from a server by a native Android application through a webview.

My role in this project was mixed. As part of the Work & Co team, I had to help oversee some of the managerial aspects of the project, as well as actually implement some features. I ended up helping both on the native side, implementing some native Android features and fixing bugs using Java, as well as on the user interface side, working on the web UI that is seen by the users in JavaScript.

With a team of dozens working on both the native application and the web UI, my contributions to the project were relatively focused. Still, it was a project I'm proud of having helped bring to life. It's not always that you get to create something that is seen by 16 million people (as of December 2018).

Also interestingly, this installer was always meant to live on: despite starting as an exclusive Fortnite installer, it later morphed into Epic Games' official game installer.
